Trump set for Manhattan stay — but with less time at Trump Tower

Written by Lisa

President Donald Trump will return to Manhattan next week, but he’s scheduled to spend more time at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel than at his own Trump Tower.

The president will arrive at his home in Trump Tower on Sunday afternoon, ahead of the United Nations General Assembly next week, according to a draft schedule shared with New York City law enforcement and reviewed by POLITICO. The trip marks his third visit to Manhattan since Inauguration Day, and as scheduled will be his longest stay back home since then.

But the homebody president is set to spend the majority of his week holed up in meetings at the Lotte New York Palace Hotel, on Madison Avenue, according to the draft schedule. White House staff will be working out of the hotel, which will also serve as central command for the State Department and the setting for many of the U.S.-hosted bilateral meetings, a source familiar with the planning for the General Assembly said.

The Palace Hotel replaced the Waldorf Astoria as the U.S. diplomatic hub during the General Assembly in 2015, after the Waldorf was purchased by a Chinese insurance group and there were increased concerns about espionage. President Barack Obama and his secretary of state at the time, John Kerry, both stayed at the Palace Hotel in 2015 and 2016. It is owned by a South Korean hotel chain.

But Trump will instead stay four nights at his three-story penthouse apartment on the 66th floor of Trump Tower. If he sticks to the draft schedule, which is still subject to change, it will mark his longest visit home since moving into the White House last January. In May, Trump attended a dinner reception at the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Intrepid but did not even stay overnight in the city. In August, the president returned to Trump Tower for the first time, for three nights of his working vacation.

A White House spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment about the president’s schedule.
