President Donald Trump tweeted Saturday morning that Republican senators “look like fools and are just wasting time” by allowing Democratic lawmakers to “totally control the U.S. Senate.”
In a series of early morning tweets railing against the 60-vote threshold required to overcome a Senate filibuster, Trump called on congressional GOP lawmakers to step up and “get rid of the 60 vote” requisite.
“Republicans in the Senate will NEVER win if they don’t go to a 51 vote majority NOW,” the president wrote. “They look like fools and are just wasting time.”
Republican senators this week were unable to push through legislation to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, despite seeking to do so through budget reconciliation, a move that required only a simple majority to pass. Though Republicans hold a 52-seat majority in the Senate, three GOP senators broke from the ranks and voted along with Democratic lawmakers to strike down the measure.
On Twitter Saturday, Trump wrote that “budget reconciliation is killing R’s in Senate,” urging Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to “go to 51 votes NOW and WIN.”
The president also griped that without the ability to vote as a unified majority, moderate Democrats effectively controlled congress.
“8 Dems totally control the U.S. Senate. Many great Republican bills will never pass, like Kate’s Law and complete Healthcare. Get smart!” Trump wrote.
