Mayor Bill de Blasio’s re-election campaign is fundraising off of President Donald Trump’s appearance on Long Island today, where the president, addressing law enforcement officials, said an unnamed “pathetic mayor” kept some police from doing their jobs.
“I’ve met police that are great police that aren’t allowed to do their job because they have a pathetic mayor or a mayor that doesn’t know what’s going on,” Trump told law enforcement officials on Friday.
Trump did not explicitly name de Blasio in his remarks, but the mayor’s campaign was nonetheless eager to embrace the criticism.
In a fundraising email with the subject line: “[Fight Back] Trump is in NY today, taking aim at the Mayor,” de Blasio’s re-election campaign ridiculed the president’s remarks.
“President Trump is having a bad day,” the email began. It went on to say Trump was “lashing out. And his target is de Blasio.”
Trump’s speech, in which he obliquely referred to a mayor as “weak” and “pathetic,” was “rambling” and “incoherent,” de Blasio’s campaign said, in its return volley.
The de Blasio administration has repeatedly said there is no data that backs up Trump’s possible assertion that the mayor has actually hindered the NYPD from its ability to manage gang violence.
In New York City, police have stepped up their focus on gangs. In 2016, there were 41 gang takedowns, leading to 613 arrests. So far this year, there have been 40 gang takedowns, with 496 arrests.
Trump was speaking on Long Island, where the president traveled to tout his administration’s efforts to deport undocumented immigrants, partially in the service of cracking down on a gang known as MS-13, whose members are responsible for a string of brutal murders on Long Island.
De Blasio has made Trump his primary foe in his upcoming re-election fight this November. With polls showing he leads his likely challengers in both his own party and in the general election by double digits, and his campaign has largely centered on aggrandizing his disagreements with the president.

President Trump is having a bad day. After his embarrassing defeat in the Senate last night, he is in New York — right near the place he grew up — where his approval ratings from the people who know him best are mired in the low 20s.
So he’s lashing out. And his target is Mayor de Blasio.
In a rambling, incoherent speech he called the Mayor “weak” and “pathetic,” and claimed that police here weren’t able to do their jobs effectively. Now, we know the president has a tenuous relationships with facts and data, so I will try to make this tweet-sized for him:
Crime is at historic lows in New York City because we’re growing trust between police and our communities — not using hateful rhetoric to divide our people against each other.
Look, shortly after his election, President Trump gave the Chairman of the NY Republican Party a directive: Beat Bill de Blasio. That’s because he would love to impose his hateful ideology upon the largest and most diverse city in America. This attempt to lie about life in NYC is just the latest example of that. Help us fight back.
Chip in $3 to Bill de Blasio’s re-election campaign as a way of saying we will never allow Donald Trump or one of his supporters to lead the largest and most diverse city in America. No way.
Thank you for continuing to stand with the Mayor. If last night taught us anything, it’s that Donald Trump and his agenda are no match for working people when we get organized and stand together.
All my best,
de Blasio 2017″
